We’re proud to announce that SL2 is confirmed for the Oldschool Renegades™ documentary!
Slipmatt & Lime were school friends together in Loughton, Essex where they shared a mutual love of Hip-Hop and Reggae. In 1985 Slipmatt & Lime began recordeding Hip-Hop demo’s with north London Rap duo, Gino & Mikey. In 1988, along with many others, they began going to Raves and switched allegiances from Hip-Hop to House. At one of the raves they met a crew from Ilford that included future DJ Devious D, and a 16 year old MC called Jay J. Soo after they formed SL2 with Jay J on the mic.

SL2

In 1989 they recieved a big break as Slipmatt’s older brother Paul Nelson was one of the founders/promoters of the Raindance rave organisation. SL2 became residents and started DJing all around the UK for Raindance.
SL2 signed to B-Ware Records for their first release, an acid house record called “Do That Dance”. Although the record sold well they were ripped off by the label which meant they saw no money from the release. The next 2 years saw them DJing and setting up the pirate radio station Raw FM with 3 other DJ’s. In 1991 they set up their own label “Awesome”. One of their 2 releases was “DJ’s Take Control” that sold 3500 copies and attracted the attention of XL recordings. Signing to XL, SL2 had three top 30 hits and performed all over the UK, both as DJ sets and live PA’s featuring their dancers Jo Millet (Lime’s partner at the time, and future Jungle producer, Jo) and Kelly Overett (future Cappella vocalist). (Source: Discogs)

Michael Alig (born South Bend, Indiana, April 29, 1966) is the co-founding member of the notorious Club Kids, a group of young clubgoers led by long time best friend James St. James and Alig in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1996 Alig was convicted of the murder of Andre “Angel” Melendez in a confrontation over a drug debt. Alig’s other protegés included Gitsie, Jennytalia, Robert “Freez” Riggs, Richie Rich, RuPaul, Amanda Lepore, and many other Club Kid personalities. The Club Kids’ outrageousness resulted in their appearing on the news and the television talk show circuit—they appeared on the Geraldo Rivera show five times. The Limelight NYC (left), Michael Alig (middle), Letter from Michael Alig to Maurice Steenbergen (right)

Michael was the main promotor at The legendary Limelight club in NYC, where a lot of the Oldschool Renegades once played (including me)

The Limelight in New York, which was owned by Peter Gatien and designed by Ari Bahat opened in November 1983. Located in the former Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion on Sixth Avenue in an area once known as the “Ladies’ Mile,” located in Manhattan’s Chelsea district, and originally started as a disco music and rock music club. In the 1990s, it became a prominent place to hear techno, goth, and industrial music, and to obtain recreational drugs. It earned the media’s attention in 1996 when club and party promoter Michael Alig was arrested and later convicted for the killing and dismemberment of Angel Melendez, a resident drug dealer at the club. The 2003 film Party Monster, starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green, was based on this event. The Limelight was closed by the police, but subsequently reopened several times during the 1990s. In September 2003, it reopened under the name “Avalon,” however it closed its doors for good in 2007. While Gatien’s Limelight is no longer at the center of New York nightlife, many of the cadre of club kids such as Richie Rich and Amanda Lepore have remained active after the Limelight’s demise.

Currently Michael Alig is still in jail at Coxsackie Correctional Facility, but we’ve got an interview planned as soon as he gets out later this year.

Djax Records was founded by Saskia Slegers (Miss Djax) in 1989. Having worked in a record shop for many years, Saskia met a large number of promising artists whose music never got released because, according to the Dutch record-companies, it was “not commercial” enough. At that point she decided that the time was right to start her own label.

Since then:
For more then a decade, Praga Khan has moved dancefloors all over the world, first as a DJ, and later as an artist. First in a long series of singles was ‘Rave alarm’, released in 1991, followed by the smash hit ‘Injected with a Poison’. This single was in the UK charts for six weeks and number one in the top 10 Billboard Dance chart in Japan.

Meanwhile Praga Khan and his “partner in crime” Oliver Adams started up a second project, “Lords of Acid”. Their debut album “Lust” was released in 1992. Still today, Lords of Acid remains Praga’s favourite side project, benefiting from a huge followup in the States with high record sales and a bunch of sold-out tours all across the country.

In 1994 Carl S. Johansen joins the team. They signed a major record deal with Rick Rubin’s American Recordings for the US territory.

Meanwhile, Hollywood started to get aware of their songwritership. After the music they scored in ‘Basic Instinct’, they were asked to write music for several box office successes such as ‘Sliver’, ‘Bad Lieutenant’, ‘Strange Days’, ‘The Spy who Shagged Me’ and many more. They even wrote a full album under the name The Immortals for the then #1 video game Mortal Kombat.

As remixers Praga Khan and his team were also very demanded and they achieved remixes for people as various as Jean-Michel Jarre, White Zombie, Alice in Chains, Gravity Kills and more.

In 1998 Praga Khan releases “Pragamatic”. After years of success abroad, this album marks the beginning of huge following in their home country. The Praga Khan live set becomes more and more legendary, and twice in a row, they win Belgian music station TMF’s “Best Live Act” award. During the summer of 99 Praga Khan performed at some of Europe’s biggest festivals, such as Werchter (Belgium), Glastonbury (UK), Bizarre (Germany).

Beginning of 2004 Praga Khan is the first band to sign on the brandnew Stella Artois Music-label. “Electric Religion” consolidates the bands reputation in the alternative dance scene. While singles such as “Supermodel” or “2.0.0.4.(Life)” may sound familiar to someone who knows the band, the album contains a surprisingly wide variation of moods, including beautiful slower songs (“Hollywood”, “Mistress of Dreams”Š)

Fall 2004 Praga Khan will introduce “The Next Dimension”, an ambitious theatre tour, in which they will create a platform for the many artforms the band has been connected to over the years. The music of Praga Khan, performed live, in specially adapted versions, many of them with classical arrangements, will be the spine of a spectacular perfomance, integrating video-art, ballet, fashion, painting, performing arts and more.

Lenny Dee is a native of New York. He started his career in 1984 DJing in a local roller disco in Brooklyn NYC at the age of 17. Lenny Dee is recognized as one of New York’s earliest Techno pioneers. His earlier music consisted of Disco, Electro-Body, High Energy and early House. In 1989, Lenny’s musical exploits brought him to Europe, which changed his direction once again.
